CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE
Critical Illness Insurance provides a lump sum benefit payment, upon survival from one of a number of specified diseases. The list of covered diseases may vary between insurance companies providing this insurance and even between individual and group plans. The list typically includes cancer, heart attack, stroke, multiple sclerosis, renal failure, Alzheimer's and blindness with the list usually more comprehensive for individual plans than for group plans.
Life, disability income and even long term care insurance leave gaps in coverage for the survivor of critical illness. Life insurance pays only at death, except for plans with an accelerated benefit provision which normally requires death to be expected to occur within a short period of time for accelerated benefits to be payable. Disability benefits pay a portion of lost wages. Long term care insurance provides reimbursement for care needs because of the loss of two or more activities of daily living.
The same tremendous strides in medical technology that help our parents live longer and create a need for long term care insurance also help our peers survive diseases that were once killers. Modern medicine today will save the patient but may create a huge financial drain to which traditional products cannot respond. That is why we now need critical illness insurance.
